Dear Mom and Dad, 41 Years, huh? That’s a lot of years. The two of you share a special day with Sean Connery. He turns 84 years old today. Using the power of mathematics, that means he would have been 43 at your wedding. Too bad you didn’t invite him to the wedding. I bet he would have come and would have looked dashing. But he would have been most jealous of Dad’s magnificent “afro”. Today is also the birthday of one Ivan the Terrible. He would be turning 484 years old today. And for a while, I compared your parenting style to Ivan the Terrible’s ruling style when I was a kid (and really, you can blame dad for giving me books on Russian history and planting that seed in my head) . I still think Mom violated the Geneva Conventions with that whole cayenne pepper on the tongue punishment… And a final person who celebrates a birthday on the same day as your wedding anniversary is Rachael Ray. A lot of people have learned a lot of cooking techniques from her over the years (and some annoying speech patterns). But I will always remember the two of you teaching me to cook, and in doing so to not be afraid of making mistakes when trying something new. Which, in hindsight, I made plenty of mistakes and learned a great deal from those mistakes because of the guidance of you both. What this really long post is trying to get at is simple. Thanks for being amazing parents. Thanks for showing the six of us what a strong marriage can look like. Thanks for teaching us, guiding us, letting us fail, and being there to pick us up when we fell. Happy anniversary. We love you.
