Dear Mr. Beaty: Thank you for your recent correspondence regarding Obamacare . Your taking time to contact me is appreciated. It has been over three years since Senate and House Democrats forced the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) in Congress. I voted against passage of the bill in 2009, and I continue to pursue efforts to defund and repeal it today. I am a cosponsor of S. 177, the " ObamaCare Repeal Act," which would repeal the health care law entirely and S.1292, the "Defund ObamaCare Act . " Some of my colleagues have suggested voting against the upcoming Continuing Resolution (CR) that funds the government, unless funding for the ACA is completely removed. While I share their goal of defunding and repealing Obamacare , I have a difference of opinion on how best to achieve this common objective. A failure to pass a CR will inevitably lead to a government shutdown. This will result in seniors failing to get social security checks and military members not getting paid, among other negative impacts. U nfortunately, it also would do little to unwind this terrible bill because much of the associated funding has already been allocated outside the CR. I believe t he proper way to achieve this shared goal is through meaningful legislation. The bills I have cosponsored would allow us to start anew with reform that consists of commonsense, market based solutions that will lower health care costs for all Americans. This is not the final chapter in the health care reform debate. I am ready to work with my Senate colleagues to completely eliminate the ACA and begin anew to develop transparent and measured reforms to ensure that every American has access to quality and affordable care in a manner consistent with our constitution .
