Dear Mr Trousdell, As has already been said by so many people who have loved and admired you, I am shocked, saddened, and dismayed to hear what is happening to you and your family. You will all be in my thoughts in the days to come. I have to wonder how something like this could happen to someone as kind as you, but life doesn’t often offer any clear-cut answers. It is so easy to ask and to wonder why bad things happen, yet we often forget to ask how and why the good things happen to us, too (and why we were privileged enough, above other people more deserving people, to have had good things in our lives that they have not). I would consider my association with you to be one of those good things. You had such a positive effect on my life in high school. I lacked a lot of self-confidence in my teen years, and, as you may remember, I was also suffering from medical issues that were affecting my concentration in class. For someone who relied on academics to feel good about themselves, I was so upset by my declining grades, and I didn’t know what to do. It was a stress, especially when I didn’t know I was suffering from a medicated depression, and you were someone who reached out to me amongst that slight darkness. You were supportive of my questions in class, and in seeking extra help, and, when I came to you to ask to get out of our Math final (as I was just below the cut-off for exemption), you let me off the hook to take care of my mental and emotional well-being. It was such a kindness, and it meant a lot to me to be able to recover, to be able to rest (and to feel safe). You are so funny and approachable, and you are someone who is not only passionate about teaching but who also employs an ethic of care within education. You so obviously care for your students, and I can only wish you the best, and thank you for all that youve done. It’s important for teachers to learn what effect they’ve had on their students. I’m glad I get the chance to tell you how you have helped me.
