Dear friends of the Festival The weather is looking perfect for the Festival this weekend! The last festival in 2011 attracted a record 27,000 visitors, and this year is predicted to draw an even bigger crowd. All of the Port’s major museum’s – the SA Maritime Museum, the SA Aviation Museum and the National Railway Museum – will offer free admission. The popular Artists Market will again take pride of place and feature over 60 stalls of ceramics, glass, paintings, photography, home wares, jewellery and other unique items. There are around 100 individual events, 70 FREE activities and over 85 family friendly activities! This year the Port’s colourful migrant past will be a big focus, with the Festival paying homage – quite literally - to the humble suitcase. Port Adelaide’s history is grounded by new arrivals - with their worldly possessions in suitcases - and there will be lots of enlightening exhibitions that pay tribute to this, with everything from a colourful suitcase art trail to a giant suitcase, and even an intimate suitcase-shaped cinema where audiences will discover ‘Every Suitcase Holds a Story’. Also making a return is the Complete Seafood Experience, presented by the Australian Maritime and Fisheries Academy, which showcases the journey of the State’s famous seafood from ocean to plate and gives your tastebuds a chance to explore. Not to be missed will be By Air Mail, a spectacular aerial gymnastics display featuring maritime characters flying through an intricate “rigging” of ropes, nets and sail-like silks. Other program highlights include a unique opportunity to take a guided historical tour of the 19th century Torrens Island Quarantine Station and, on a lighter and certainly brighter note, the dazzling night-time light display of Future Portal. You will remember at the last Festival, projection artists Illuminart used the beautiful heritage buildings of Lipson Street as a backdrop for stories about the Port’s past and this year they are turning their sights to the future and what the Port could become if the limits of our imagination were the only parameters – not to be missed!
