Dear members, please be aware of a TGA proposal to amend the advertising code directed to health professionals. The consultation document can be found at tga.gov.au/newsroom/consult-advertising-ris-130531.htm See Proposal 6 in particular. This the proposed changes may effect what advertising material product suppliers will be able to supply us with. The general intention of these changes is to better protect the public, and some of the suggested changes are positive. However, their proposed changes will mean that it is ok to provide information to a nationally registered health professional regardless of whether or not they are trained in prescribing those medicines, and excludes health practitioners (nats and herbalists) who are adequately trained. Under Option 2 of this proposal nats and herbalists are considered consumers and not health professionals. This will not restrict access to medicines, only the provision of advertising material by the suppliers (e.g. MediHerb). In practical terms this means that you may not receive educational material, so it will be up to practitioners to source information independently. If you are concerned about the implications of this please make a submission to the TGA at the link provided by 12 July. The NHAA will be making a submission on behalf of our members.
