Dearest friends and sailors! Day 3 St Martin. We are learning some - TopicsExpress

Dearest friends and sailors! Day 3 St Martin. We are learning some things about this island. The locals dont have much money, the tourists have more money and the boaters (yachties) have lots of money. Last night we went to one of the many outdoor bars because we heard they were playing classic rock and we had met the chef the previous night and learned of his attempt at chartering ten years ago on the Jeanneau 50 with his wife. They tried three charters and decided it was not or them. They are British and now live on St Martin and love it. It seems everyone I have talked to who lives here loves it. Now he is a chef at an outdoor café. We met a young man who said he is the chef (and he just made a crossing of the Atlantic) on a mega yacht six stories high with a crew of 24 who were all partying it up at the bar. The yacht cost about 150 million. The owner was not even on the boat. Roger and I had seen the boat in the marina. We learned from our new British friends that there will be a row of these mega yachts soon. Such a different world. This is definitely a tourist destination for wealthy Europeans... And the season has just begun. So, the question of us fitting in to this scene.... well we seem to run somewhere in the middle of having a lot and having little. I think we are seen as people with money and I feel like I am wearing a dollar sign sometimes. Today we met with the dinghy davit guy. Davits will hold up the dingy. We met with the canvas maker and the rigger and the . We met with the IT guy and the guy doing the bottom paint who came to return one of the fans Roger traded to him for some work on the decks. We also traded him the TV on the boat and another fan that did work. He came back to get cash for the fan that didnt work. I found a place to do take our laundry. No place for us to do it ourselves. It costs $1.00/lb. with a minimum of 10 pounds. I will definitely tip the laundry woman. And with all of that it is so warm I am sweating all of the time. The wind is strong tonight which helps keep us cool on the boat. Saturday we are going to take stuff from the boat that we dont need and sell it to the local flea market. I will send photos of the boat when it is not such a mess. Photos are of beach front, a ship that sunk during Hurricane Gonzolo, roger at the bar with bartender Jason and Roger working with the canvas alterations person, Nettie.... we learned the head sail needs a trim job, six inches off to be exact. Love Linda
