Deep in the lush jungles of the Nkokonjeru region, lies the remote village of Kanga. The sleepy village brings together diverse cultures and beliefs, with Christian, Muslim and Animistic families all living in harmony. With average household incomes of between $0.15 and $0.25/ day, families struggled to meet even their most basic needs. With the nearest primary school over 10 km away and school fees too high for struggling families, high illiteracy and low enrollment were prevalent throughout the village. The roads were often inaccessible in rainy seasons, which exacerbated the community’s struggle with extreme poverty. Following the drowning of a boy attempting to cross the river on his way to school, the people of Kanga came together to form a community school. Five acres of land were donated by the family and Kanga Primary was born. A 100 dollar loan was taken out by the community to purchase tin sheets to construct their makeshift classrooms. Local leaders wanted the school to provide tuition subsidies to children to ensure access to education for even the poorest families. However, they also recognized that their lack of infrastructure, funds and know-how were preventing the realization of their goals.
