Defecting Lawmakers Yet to Notify Us, Says Anambra Govt The Anambra State Government yesterday denied the report that some members of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) from the state in the House of Representatives have defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying it is a mere speculation because the defecting legislators have not notified it. Penultimate weekend, the quartet of Hon. Uche Ekwunife representing Anaocha/Njikoka/Dunukofia in the House of Representatives, Hon. Victor Afam Ogene (Ogbaru Federal Constituency) Hon. Azubuogu (Nnewi North/South/Ekwusigo) and Hon. Egwuatu (Onitsha North/South) all elected on APGA platform into the House of Representatives, announced their defection to the PDP in Awka. But the Political Adviser to Governor Willie Obiano, Chief Joe Martins Uzodike, told journalists at the government house in Awka yesterday that their defection remained a matter of speculation and newspaper reports because none of them had notified neither the state government nor the APGA in the state. “As far as I am concerned and a high ranking member of this government and APGA, I have not been privy to any discussions on anybody defecting from our party to another party. Neither my governor nor any other person has told me of that. “Anybody who defects will lose his seat or go back for revalidation. The speculation is that they may be defecting because they want to stand for re-election on another party platform. But newspaper report is not defection because defection takes place on the floor of the House, and everybody is free to look at the reports from the perspective he or she wants,” he said. He said though their defection is currently a newspaper report,” but that it is premature to assert reasons for their action since neither the party nor the state government had been served notice that they had defected to other parties. The defecting members he said are still considered members of the party because the law says that anyone who wants to defect from one party to another has to tender his or her letter of resignation from the party, adding, “It is a requirement, but up till now we have not seen any letter of resignation and until it comes, the whole thing remains a speculation. They still remain our prominent members of the party.” He, however, contended that should the lawmakers actually decide to defect, they won’t be leaving an empty APGA behind since according to him, people are queuing up to fight for the positions they may have left behind. “It is desirous that we have them, but where we don’t, others are there,” he said.
