Defence Ministry dissatisfied with PEMRAs decision against Geo News. Geo given too late and less punishment, say military sources. The minister has vowed to appeal seeking extension in Geo News punishment. PEMRA has taken the decision too late and less punishment has been given to Geo News, the military sources said. The military sources said that Pakistan Army was targeted despite being in state of war. The military sources asked that who will give answer to the campaign that has been going on against army and ISI for the last few weeks? What were the motives of those who targeted chief of the country’s prime intelligence agency? Whom did they serve by maligning the image of security institutions? Army’s struggle and sacrifices in war against terrorism are known to everyone. Army is bound to follow constitutional responsibilities and protect country’s borders. The sources said army is well aware of its professional responsibilities. Agenda of those criticizing the institution should be known first. It may be mentioned here that PEMRA on Friday suspended the licence of Geo News for 15 days for defaming the army and the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). The suspension of the licence of Geo News was announced by Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) after a meeting chaired by its chief Parvez Rathore. It also asked the channel to pay Rs. 10 million as fine. The meeting was held to address a complaint filed by Ministry of Defence against Geo News for blaming Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency and its chief Lt Gen Zaheerul Islam for attack on leading journalist Hamid Mir, who was seriously injured in a shoot-out in April. The Defence ministry had demanded that the licence of Geo News be suspended after it accused that the ISI was behind the attack on Mr Mir in Karachi. The controversy erupted after Mr Mir s brother accused certain elements in the ISI and its chief of orchestrating the attack, a charge denied by the military. Geo TV network and Jang Group, which owns the channel, on May 26 had issued an apology to Pakistan s armed forces and the ISI for making the allegations.
