Define Me - Ryan Amador (featuring Jo Lampert) ** People put labels on us. In my youth Sissy Faggot was one I heard all too often. I felt defective and submerged inside a constructed male persona to protect myself. It took a very long time to come to myself and do that which I feared would be losing all, to transition. At times I hear those kinds of labels tossed my way again but theyre far less frequent than in my childhood. ** We also put labels on ourselves. Today, transitioned, Im a woman but also I apply the label Transwoman to myself. My family transitioned with me rather than reject me and these days my kids call me De De (the label mum is taken) and it warms my heart to get mothers day rather than fathers day presents. At work in my womens uniform of Hard Yakka navy blue work wear, purple safety boots and sporting a hair band and handbag the label Transwoman quickly tells the world of my journey to womanhood. In my workplace Im a woman and I use the label Transwoman as shorthand to help new clients think of me as such rather than Gay or Gender Queer as theyre not my identity. A large part of why I use the label is to save time managing the expectations of people who dont yet know me as first impressions of a book are of its cover. Its a simple fact that people are conditioned to expect a man in my role as there are few women in my enginering industry and far fewer transwomen. ** A life without labels. Life without labels can be beautiful. I had this experience in Sydney the weekend of the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and I have this experience at work with my colleagues and clients who already know me. I also have it in abundance amongst my burlesque friends and family. To the people who are my friends Im a woman and its just lovely to not even think of labels whilst Im enjoying living :-) https://youtube/watch?v=HyNSGff-Nh4
