Democracy and Monarchy The practice of democracy will not be - TopicsExpress

Democracy and Monarchy The practice of democracy will not be perfect without the presence of accountability. I dont think there is disagreement on that. Building from this, I would like to suggest a proposition, I believe that the decision in the appointment of MB or other important position must ultimately lies on the party that will be held accountable for that decision. Allow me to elaborate on this. Take for example the case of Khir Toyo. The former Selangor MB was once convicted for the crime of corruption and abuse of power. When the case first surfaced, blame is imposed not just to Mr. Khir, but to the party who fielded him as MB namely UMNO. This is reasonable as obviously the party must be held accountable for the integrity of its leader especially one who occupy important position like the office of Menteri Besar. Also in the case of TSKI. When PKR opted to disclose all the alleged misconduct regarding to TSKIs administration, the first comment that has emerged was why PKR still nominate him as MB for the second term. This also reasonable because if they have suspected that TSKI might have engaged in questionable activities, PKR should not have made the nomination at the first place. What I wish to highlight is, notice that in both cases, zero liability was attached to the Sultan. One might ask, why is this the case. Because if u refer to the State or Federal Constitution, it is written that the power to make such appointment is vested in the Sultan. Dont u think it is logical to argue then that Sultan must share part of the blame if the individual whom Baginda has appointed end up corrupt or abuse his/her power. The simple answer to the question is big no. Because in practice, it is the party who has the discretion to decide among themselves who they think is the most appropriate individual to be appointed for the important position. And this freedom which we granted to them is attached with liability. The party is held with full accountability in a sense that they will be rewarded or punished accordingly for the decision come the next general election. My conclusion is, when I say that PKR has the mandate to remove TSKI, it is not to be confused as an attack to the souverignity of the King or his power in making appointment. Instead, this is to uphold the principle of accountability and democracy that we cherish and practice for so long
