What is empathy? Truly empathizing with what someone else is - TopicsExpress

What is empathy? Truly empathizing with what someone else is going through might be some of the hardest thing for us to do. To really understand the pain, the darkness and the suffering. How can you truly know how it is to be unemployed and not valued by the society, if you have never been in the situation yourself and felt the same pain and despair? How can you empathize with the unfathomable sensation of injustice if you are put in jail for no-good-reason, or if a family member gets beaten up by the police just because the offering was going through some rough time at home? Many of us do work hard on improving our ability to empathize. But it takes time, and relevant personal experience. In order to truly help those who find themselves stuck in a dark place, having been there ourselves at some point is key. Which is why those best suited to help are those who have been there, done that, and found a way out. They might have had help, so for them it is a way to pay forward. Bottom line is that our current welfare system is suboptimal, as throwing money around doesnt really help in the long run, and is not a long term solution anyway, since that abundance will eventually fade. Which is why the world needs more social entrepreneurs, which build Social Ventures to offer more sustainable solutions that better follow the principle of teaching a man how to fish. themindunleashed.org/2015/01/difference-sympathy-empathy.html
