: Depression.. What does it feel like? Its like youre drowning.. except you can see everyone around you breathing. It deprives you of feeling anything other than a sense of perpetual sadness, never quite knowing the source of it but knowing that feeling well. It makes you want to stand in a field and scream your head off - but you dont know why. “Sometimes,” says a fellow depressive, “I wish I was in a full body cast, with every bone in my body broken. That’s how I feel anyway. Then, maybe, people would stop minimizing my illness because they can actually see what’s wrong with me. They seem to need physical evidence.” - Sally Brampton, Shoot The Damn Dog: A Memoir Of Depression. Depression is a hidden illness. You dont know who suffers from it. Ive suffered from it, my loved ones have suffered from it and some of my loved ones are currently suffering from it. The most important thing to remember is to not belittle them, but to support them. Some days are better than others. Some days are worse than others. It can get messy. No matter where you are on the spectrum - your thoughts and feelings are valid. You are precious. You deserve to be listened to. You deserve compassion. However, some people may not feel like they have a choice. Theyll feel like theyre a disappointment to society. Theyll feel like the world would be better off without them, and decide to kill themselves. This is sad. This is upsetting. Some people may say its selfish, that theyre leaving their family and friends behind. But sometimes, the fog is so thick, you cant see anything.. As hard as it may be to believe, recovery IS possible. Take things one day at a time. Surround yourself with people you love - reach out to them. Your loved ones care about you and want to help. They dont have to help to fix you, they just need to be good listeners. Allow yourself to be less than perfect. Nobody is. If there’s love, dear… those are the ties that bind. - Euphegenia Doubtfire. Robin Williams, you were one in a billion. A legend. You were part of my childhood. You made me smile. You took me away to a magical place. You made me cry. You made me realise that we all have faults and flaws.. and thats okay. *stands on my desk* O captain! My captain..
