The purpose of the visit is to provide an opportunity for Tibetan entrepreneurs, students and settlements to interact with renowned human capital development executive at Omidyar Network, a leading investment firm established in 2004 by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar. “Combining empathy with rigor is paramount to success,” said Mr Giambanco while speaking to the 75 commerce students at the Dalai Lama Institute of Higher Education. Mr Giambanco also stressed the importance of networking with role models outside the community to generate new ideas and bring innovation to the community. Mr Giambanco is on a 4-day tour from 23 – 26 July 2014, organised by TED in partnership with Settlement Offices in South India. Mr Giambanco is accompanied by Finance Secretary Thinley Gyatso, Chief Representative of South India Tibetan Settlements Karma Sangay, and Tenzin Wangyal, TED Coordinator. Despite the one-direction migratory trend to North America and Europe, the Tibetan youth population continues to concentrate in India, representing approximately 80% of total youth population outside Tibet. According to Finance Kalon Tsering Dhundup, it is precisely this segment of the youth population that needs concerted effort from CTA and stakeholders, and will form a critical vantage determining the long-term sustainability of Tibetan settlements. TED is a recently conceptualised initiative of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) aiming to mobilise and amplify Tibetan entrepreneurial spirit by fostering, nurturing, accelerating value-add connections and celebrating entrepreneurship. TED aims to be an agent of change in helping orient Tibetan entrepreneurs and businesses towards becoming competitive, sustainable and impact-oriented. TED aims to affect the profound transformation of the Tibetan community in-exile with its role as a mobiliser of the Tibetan entrepreneurial spirit to partake in global opportunities and contribute to the community’s economic well-being. In doing so, TED aims to support existing businesses’ expansion and sustainability, as well as convert high-potential youth business ideas into successful ventures. During Mr Giambanco’s meetings with stakeholders in the Tibetan Settlements, he sought to better understand the key drivers of Tibetan Settlements’ economic viability and explore ways in which Omidyar could continue to support the revitalisation of the Tibetan diaspora in India through entrepreneurship.
