Dereham Mens 1st XI 2 Chelmsford 4 Dereham were unable to complete their home fixtures with a victory when Chelmsford became the first team to take the 3 points away since November. Emotions were running high as Dereham welcomed back former captain Richard Stainthorpe following the tragic death of his young daughter. The home team started strongly and immediately pushed the visitors onto the back foot as they looked for an early advantage. Unfortunately Derehams recent problems in front of goal continued and they were unable to take advantage. The visitors grew into the game, and broke the deadlock twenty minutes into the game as their forward drilled his shot on the turn low into the bottom corner. It was Chelmsfords turn to take the ascendancy, and were piling the pressure on in the centre of midfield. Two goals either side of the half time whistle secured the victory for the visitors, the first an unstoppable shot which clipped the inside of the post as it flew in, and the second a drag flicked short corner. With 25 minutes left, it was 4-0 to the visitors with a low reverse stick shot. It was beginning to look plain sailing for the visitors, but Dereham were not going to roll over easily. They were given a glimmer of hope when Ed Turner broke into the D and won a penalty flick, but unfortunately Mike Timm saw his flick saved. Unperturbed, Dereham pushed further. Will Edwards broke from inside his own half, and having beaten five players, he was able to finish by sliding the ball past the out coming keeper. He doubled his tally shortly afterwards following up his own short corner strike, to make the last ten minutes very nervous for the visitors. Again they created chances, but the Chelmsford keeper was in fine form, and kept Dereham at bay. Captain Andy Lawrence said afterwards of course we are disappointed, but after what happened this week it has put things into perspective. We are a family club, what Richard and Donna have been through is heartbreaking, they have never been far from our thoughts, it was great to see him back today. Dereham sign off the season next week with a trip to Wapping.
