The frantic, starving pooch was caught in the metal cable fastened to her harness and could have frozen to death if a kind-hearted passerby hadn’t stopped to help, rescue group 4 Paws 1 Heart reported on its Website. “As it turns out, this very sweet female had chewed her paw off in an attempt to break away and because she had been tied up for days without food,” the post said. “She actually ate her paw.” Two men were caught on surveillance video obtained by WDIV 4 dumping the sandy-haired 2-year-old near piles of plastic crates at the Walmart in Roseville. They hitched her to a rail and sped off, leaving the abandoned pet running back in forth in search of help. The cable wrapped tightly around one of her legs as she struggled. With the cold weather we’ve had she was probably out there freezing. She had no way to stay warm.” Police are still searching for the ice-cold dog dumpers as the rescued canine recovers. Animal workers have named the poor pooch Courtney. She needed two surgeries when she was finally saved on Monday — one to repair the wounded limb, the second to remove the bone chips of the eaten paw from her stomach.
