Despite the lake freezing over, there was a great turn out at Cherry Creek State Park to shoot the eagles flying around and perched in the trees. I need to reports some minor complaints from the CCSP regulars that said the influx of photographers included some not so well behaved. In particular, I heard complaints of people leaving their cars to approach the eagles on their night-perches near the campground. Once, there were eight perched and a woman with a big rig on tripod approached them to shoot up their tail feathers and scared off six out of eight birds. She was later heard bragging that she didnt scare them all off. ;-( The birders HATE this behavior from photographers. The birders seem intent on counting the birds, multiplying by two and moving on, while we photographers want a great shot of one of the birds. I think that we have to resist the urge to get closer, in many circumstances. Also, there is a Colorado state law proscribing that everyone avoid approaching a hunting perch or sleeping perch more closely than 500-yards. The road at CCSP is way less than 500-yards and Ive spoken to the rangers and they will not cite you on the road. Approaching closer and youre in violation of a law that could result in fines and imprisonment. We have a really nice situation at CCSP, where the eagles have chosen to stay relatively close to us. They actually perch above picnic tables and their flight paths go right over some areas where we can get great shots from in our cars, standing near our cars or standing on points and waiting for them to fly by.
