Destitute elderly need our help! Aaron, Tears come to - TopicsExpress

Destitute elderly need our help! Aaron, Tears come to my eyes when I think of all the elderly Jews I’ve met in the former Soviet Union whose lives will once again be threatened by extreme poverty and winter cold. Try to imagine what it must be like for Eda. She was 26 when the first death camps were liberated. Today she is 95 and is still praying someone will come and help her. Eda can’t even afford to buy food or medicine. Aaron, I know you believe as I do that Eda and others should never have to live this way. Eda worked hard all her life – she was a distinguished engineer and the Soviet state assured her of a good pension. But ever since the Soviet Union fell apart, she’s had to make do with a tiny fraction of what she worked for and was promised. When her husband died, Eda was desperate. She sold all of her treasured books and most of her possessions just to buy medicine and food. Eda now lives in a shabby apartment with her daughter, who is also retired. They have to use a public toilet. And even if they could afford gas to heat their home, it isn’t connected. Imagine Eda thinking, “I did not survive the Holocaust for this.” But your partnership with The Fellowship will answer her prayers. Your gift will provide meals, blankets, and medical care in time for the brutal winter. With your gift of $50 or more, we will send you hand-painted notecards by the seniors of Yad LaKashish, a Fellowship-funded program that helps Jerusalem’s elderly and disabled residents lead dignified and productive lives. And thank you so much for taking the opportunity to provide cold and lonely elderly Jews a chance to survive the coming winter! With prayers for shalom, peace, Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein Founder and President PS Let us remember the words of the Psalmist, “Do not cast me away when I am old; do not forsake me when my strength is gone” (Psalm 71:9).
