DevilS Elbow Fire Update August 11, 2014 2000 Hrs Incident: DevilS Elbow Complex Wildfire Released: 1:59 hrs. ago Devil’s Elbow Fire provides initial attack support to Reservation fire near Inchelium Nespelem, Wash., Firefighting and aviation resources from the Devil’s Elbow Fire Complex supported suppression resources from the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation’s Mt. Tolman Fire program as they managed the Smoke Ranch 3 fire burning west of the Inchelium Highway in the Fall Creek area. Firefighters caught this new start at 30 acres, a very successful action considering the extreme burning conditions today. Air support for the Devil’s Elbow Fire was limited by the dense smoke, but several helicopters were able to continue work along the west perimeter of the Complex where visibility was improved by southwesterly winds. Firefighters along all fronts of the fire worked today to secure and reinforce existing containment lines. The atmospheric inversion that develops over the fire during the night lifted slowly mid-day, causing an increase in fire behavior. The fire continues to move slowly toward containment lines along the south and west perimeters. A tenth-acre spot across the east perimeter (Keno Trail) was extinguished by ground crews and a 70-acre finger that burned north across fire lines at Twentyfive Mile Road last night was contained. A cold, dry, thunderstorm is expected to move over the region late tonight, arriving from the south. Scattered showers are expected tomorrow with up to a quarter-inch of rain Wednesday and up to a half-inch on Thursday. Cooler temperatures and higher humidity will bring some relief to firefighters, but new ignitions from lightning and downdrafts as the thunderstorms pass are always of concern.
