Devotion for October 17: S. Genesis 47:13, 18-20, 25 13 There was no food in the land because the famine was so severe. The land of Egypt and the land of Canaan dried up from the famine. 18 When that year was over, they came to him the next year and said to him, We can’t hide from my master that the silver is spent and that we’ve given the livestock to my master. All that’s left for my master is our corpses and our farmland. 19 Why should we die before your eyes, we and our farmland too? Buy us and our farms for food, and we and our farms will be under Pharaoh’s control. Give us seed so that we can stay alive and not die, and so that our farmland won’t become unproductive. 20 So Joseph bought all of Egypt’s farmland for Pharaoh because every Egyptian sold his field when the famine worsened. So the land became Pharaoh’s. 25 The people said, You’ve saved our lives. If you wish, we will be Pharaoh’s slaves. O. The famine in Egypt continues, and gets worse. Joseph has previously displayed administrative talents, running the household for Potiphar, and basically running the prison while a guest of the facilities. Now those talents are front and center as Joseph works to get Egypt through the famine. Joseph has already acknowledged that everything that has happened was leading to this moment - Joseph was attacked by his own brothers, sold into slavery, imprisoned, and then rose to power in a foreign country to save not only his own family from the terrible famine, but the people of Egypt as well. A. Sometimes, Gods plans dont follow a straight line between points A and B - sometimes they take the scenic route. The talents that God gave Joseph might not have grown and matured to be what was needed and used for this situation if events had unfolded differently. We grow and learn and are strengthened by the trials and situations that we go through. Lessons are learned and talents are discovered and strengthened for use as we go through the hills and valleys that make up our lives. We may not be on course to save a entire country from disaster, but God has a plan and something for us to learn and discover and use every day in every situation we encounter. P. Father, we thank You for Your love and for everything You give us. Please help us to see the lessons we are to learn, and the talents that are to be strengthened and used for You. Let us feel Your presence with us through every moment of every day, and know that You are guiding us through our own prisons and famines as we learn and grow. Help us to be ready when the moments You have planned for us to be front and center occur.
