Devotional message with Pastor Elsie December 9 Scripture Reading: Job 28:12–28 “Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding? Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowls of the air. Destruction and death say, We have heard the fame thereof with our ears. God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth the place thereof” (Job 28:20 – 23). Where Shall Wisdom be Found? Father God, you are all we want. You are all we need. Help us know you are near. We thank you for your presence and the counsel in your Word. We thank you for your spirit of wisdom. Bless us with wisdom in Jesus’ name. Many people encounter circumstances that cause them to long for wisdom. If only I had the wisdom to handle this, people think. Wisdom is the ability to correctly apply information and knowledge you have acquired to best deal with a circumstance. The absence of wisdom leads us to foolishness. Indeed, wisdom is the principal thing in life. “But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding? Man knoweth not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living. The depth saith, It is not in me: and the sea saith, It is not with me. It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof. It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire. The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it shall not be for jewels of fine gold. No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom is above rubies. The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold. Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?” (Job 28:12–20). If you want wisdom in any situation, you must first ask yourself: Do I fear God? Fearing God does not mean running away whenever you see Him. If you fear God, you factor Him into everything. For example, say you are driving and contemplating whether to cut through traffic since no policeman is around to penalize you. If you factor God into the situation, you will decide to drive carefully. That is the wise course of action since you avoid any possible crash. “For he looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven; To make the weight for the winds; and he weigheth the waters by measure. When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder: Then did he see it, and declare it; he prepared it, yea, and searched it out. And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding” (Job 28:24–28). When you fear God, you will apply wisdom to every decision. You might be on the brink of falling into sin; perhaps you are being tempted beyond what you think you can bear and the devil is saying to you, “You’re safe.” If you fear God, you will ignore the devil and factor God into your situation. Then, you will act correctly and you will be blessed for it. This was the case for Joseph. Joseph’s siblings had mistreated him. They had just sold him into slavery and while he was serving in his master’s house, his master’s wife tempted him to lay with her. But Joseph said, “How can I do this and sin against God?” If we, like Joseph, fear God in every situation, even when God does not seem to be directly involved, wisdom will manifest. Many Christians are operating without the fear of God; they are acting in folly. This is why many Christians are in pain today. May God give us the grace to fear Him and apply wisdom to every situation. Prayer Points: You cannot begin to fear God if you are not born again. So pray with me now, “Dear Lord Jesus, I accept you as my personal Lord and Savior. I confess and forsake my sins. Cleanse me from my sins with your blood and write my name in the Book of Life. Accept me as your child. Give me the grace to fear God in my life so that I will work in wisdom and enjoy its benefits. Amen.” All-wise God, give us the grace to fear you, to factor you into all our circumstances. Give us the grace to depart from evil in the name of Jesus. Lord, give us the grace to be wise. Amen.
