Dick Black, the Senator who proposed the xenophobic bill tried to make the case that allowing DACA recipients to pay in-state tuition would the create the legal precedent for non-Virginia residents form border States make the case for in-state tuition. His evidence for this concern? A hearsay account about a case that got thrown out. Evidence to the contrary; the lack of a great migration coming from Appalachia. Senator Buckingham from Louisa County, wanted to support the bill because it would send the message to the Federal Government to do its job and a pass comprehensive immigration reform through congress. Again, we see the Senate Republicans position to protest the Federal Government and the President, at the expense of their constituents and the well being of the Commonwealth. This is the same symbolic logic that is used to block Medicaid expansion. There were no valid arguments supporting the bill. Objectively, it was a stupid, mean spirited and poorly crafted piece of legislation. It was blocked by one vote (Watkins) , and one no-vote (Vogel). The man who crossed the aisle- and voted against it, was a man that has nothing to lose. He is not seeking re-election. Sadly, this is when most representatives chose to lead. We should celebrate this victory of justice and reason, but know that democracy is fragile and it can only be strengthen my our participation.
