Did anyone read this from Todays Daily news Voice Of the People Treating sick sanitmen like dirt Flushing: My husband, a sanitationman for DSNY, had a heart attack while on a route. Instead of putting him out on line-of-duty injury, he is classified as on sick leave. This means that he is basically under house arrest. The sick leave unit calls and visits, sometimes both in one day, to verify that he has not left the house. If he wants to take a walk, as recommended by his doctor, he must call for authorization beforehand and again when he’s back. What he is experiencing is hard enough without being made to feel like some kind of criminal. Not only does he have to visit his own doctor; he also has to make trips to the DSNY clinic to show proof of all visits to his own doctor. Will he ever get back to work? No one knows, because even though he had a heart attack while in uniform, with a garbage can in his hand, he may not qualify for the heart bill. But he also may not be fit to go back on a truck. What happens then? Your guess is as good as mine. Shame on the city for putting more stress on our family during an already difficult time.
