Did you know? Over 8 million …. More than one-quarter or 28% of all Canadians are caregivers. 1/3 or 33% of Manitobans are caregivers. Much higher than the national average. 28% of Caregivers became Caregivers for Age-related situations. 11% are Cancer related. 9% take care of people with Cardio-vascular disease, and 7% take care of people with Mental illness. What do they do? Well 73% of all caregivers provide transportation to run errands, shop, and/or attend medical appointments. 51% do house cleaning and meal preparation, and 45% do house maintenance and outdoor work. Katherine Peters says that is not enough. It is a growing flood out there as our population ages. Illnesses like Alzheimer’s, Heart Related issues and diabetes are huge and growing. Families are challenged tremendously. On a positive note: - 90% of caregivers still felt that the experience of providing care was rewarding. - 70% said their relationship with their care receiver had strengthened over the course of the previous 12 months.
