Asian elephants are a unique species of elephant that live in tropical and subtropical forests across Asia and are smaller than African elephants. Deforestation, disease, and habitat loss has made a devastating impact on the Asian elephant populations. In February 2014, President Obama released a National Strategy for Combating Wildlife Trafficking, which identifies three priorities to help to reduce wildlife trafficking: strengthening domestic and global enforcement, reducing global demand, and building international cooperation and partnerships. The United States has also established a Presidential Task Force on Combating Wildlife Trafficking which is in charge of implementing the National Strategy in order to reduce illegal wildlife trade.
