Did you know that the popular image of Satan as a goat headed man is one of the original offensive Muhammad cartoons? From Wikipedia: In the trial of the Templars one of their main charges was their supposed worship of a heathen idol-head known as a Baphomet (Baphomet = Mahomet = Muhammad). The name of Baphomet was an Old French corruption of the name Muhammad, with the interpretation being that some of the Templars, through their long military occupation of the Outremer, had begun incorporating Islamic ideas into their belief system, and that this was seen and documented by the Inquisitors as heresy. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baphomet Funny story... during the crusades there were Templars who were captured, and converted to Islam in custody. At the end of the crusades they were released and returned to Europe where they were persecuted and many were killed as apostates. In response many of them hid in secret societies, and one of the heresies the Templars were accused of was harboring these heretics. The libel that the Templars trampled on the cross as an initiation is a historical artifact of this. However, information on Islam was hard to come by in medieval Europe, and so many of these converts found themselves in groups with very little access to traditional scholarship, resulting in many interesting and unusual beliefs. One such belief was a Trinitarian cosmology that substituted Muhammad for Christ, resulting in the worship of an idol of a bearded man with a turban. This image influenced later depictions of Satan, specifically the Baphomet which is the goat headed figure.
