Digitalog Concert Program By Jeff Crawford March 19, 2014, 7:30 p.m. University of the Pacific Conservatory of Music Concept (program notes) Digitalog is a convergence between digital media and analog performance. It symbolizes the dualism between digital finality and analogue infinity. We watch the screen presenting the digital works much like we gaze at our iPhone, iPad, computer screen or other digital media device. The experience is shaped by the finality of the device. In other words the digital media, although vast in its capability, can only offer one of two possible outcomes: it is either on or off, realizing the purely finite state of the binary digital realm. However, the viewer interacts with the technology, thereby becoming the living analog performer working the digital device. As the live analog performer, the possibility is endless, limited only by the physical nature of our existence. As the on-stage performer, everything is unique and spontaneous. Even the practiced work becomes a totally new experience each time the conductor’s baton is raised. The infinity of the analog performance, both as instrument and delivery, goes far above the dualistic existence of the material world, and we as the perceiver, gaze at the performance being forever changed by the individuality of the intellectual and emotional impact of the artistic event.
