Director’s Note Welcome to an historical drama in an historical setting! Part psychodrama, part tragedy, the story of James Evans’ trials – both official and unofficial – offers a lot of scope for interpretation. Cloven Hoof continued to change during the production, and our actors have cheerfully grappled with rewrites over the past weeks as we brought in more of Evans’ own words and played with the focus. We struggled with the absence of women in this latest version, particularly the Cree and Métis women who were significant in Evans’ story. After thoughtful consultation with members of those communities, we decided to keep the focus on the colonists - for now. This version highlights the exclusion from the historical record. Geoff and I discovered our own secret history. We attended the same high school in Ottawa, where our only point of intersection was in an original musical adaptation of Teahouse of the August Moon: he acted the role of the lovesick wrestler and I was his singing voice from the pit. Reunited after decades! Working with Geoff and this talented cast has been just ducky. TJA
