Disturbing news from our friends at RAC: In the past few days, up to ten mothers detained on Christmas Island have engaged in self-harm or suicide attempts; some by hanging, some by drinking concoctions of liquids. Scores of police and Serco officers have been stationed inside the family camp – almost one to a room – in an effort to maintain calm and prevent more suicide attempts. One 25 year-old woman remains in the medical centre, with at least one deep cut requiring 16 stitches, after throwing herself from a container two days ago. Tensions are said to be rising as mothers are increasingly anxious over their childrens poor health and the dirty water they are provided to drink. RAC report that mothers with very young children are so desperate to escape the poor conditions on Christmas Is that they are asking to be sent to Nauru. A court case, expected in October, is examining whether or not babies born in Australia are Australian citizens or can make their own protection claims. We thank Ian Rintoul and RAC for this update and will bring you more info on the situation as it is available.
