Division 2 Colton 2 – 2 Grangefield The game was well contested on an afternoon that was blessed with warm sunshine as the new season kicked off. An opening spell saw both teams playing good football on the floor, and fast link up play was in evidence. It was newly promoted Grangefield that took the lead after 15 minutes while Colton were down to ten men following a knee injury to debutant Joe Spencer. The build up play was quick, and there may have been a hint of offside for the Grangefield striker who slipped the ball through the legs of the onrushing Jamie Lamb, and guided it into an empty net. Colton responded immediately, with an equaliser from Chris Hick who slotted the ball passed the Grangefield ‘keeper. The through ball into Hick’s path was superbly executed by Jordan Thackray. 1-1. Straight from the kick off, Grangefield regained the lead with a low shot from inside the Colton 18 yard area putting them back in control. The game then went into a spell of very good play from both teams. First, Lamb had to tip over a long range effort that was destined for the roof of the net; then Matt Baird (who played brilliantly all game) made some excellent interceptions and tackles when Grangefield were pressing to stretch their lead. Colton meanwhile had ideas of their own in an attempt to equalise for the second time. Some good play in midfield by debutants Sean Kerrigan and Scott Bingham who linked up well with Hick and Nick Rozycki almost brought an end result, however Grangefield held firm. Half time 1 – 2. In the second half Colton were more in control, and started to build good momentum as the game wore on. Whilst there were no clear cut openings, half chances were created with clever running from Rob Ashworth, and strong forward play by full backs Josh Spratt and Joe Drake. At the other end, a clever shot by the Grangefield forward had to be quickly parried away by Lamb to keep Colton in the game. Colton pressed for an equaliser; Dan Walker came on for the injured Chris Wayman and Mike Ellington replaced the hardworking Rozycki. On 78 minutes, and after much territorial advantage, Colton scored. The ball was played up to Hick in the inside right position who played Kerrigan into the 18 yard area. The midfielder made no mistake with a first time low shot past the ‘keeper’s right hand. The final exchanges certainly belonged to the home team who increased their tempo and forced a series of corners in quick succession but were unable to clinch the victory and the visitors hung on for the point.
