Do amphibians know basic math? It turns out frogs know how to count to 3 but not higher. In animal cognition experiments, scientists use the frogs favorite food, a small worm, to find that frogs are able to distinguish small quantities, 1 worm versus 2, 2 versus 3. But when presented with 3 versus 4, the frogs were stumped. This is after the scientists controlled for continuous variables like surface area or volume. neomatica/2014/09/08/amphibian-math-frogs-display-skills-basic-numerical-discrimination/ #science
