Do we live on the same island? This is in response to the recent post about bules being ripped off. I believe that being charged more for certain things has a lot to do with where you live. We live in a somewhat nondescript part of southern Bali, no tourist restaruants, cafes, spas, souvenir shops. No men offering transport or tours. We have only seen one other bule in our neighborhood in the past 10 months. It is a working class neighborhood with many rooming houses for workers in Denpasar and for students. We never get taken because of my ethnicity or the color of my skin. Today we had a fantastic lunch at a small, local warung that totaled 29,000 IDR. The owner was so happy to have us there. We then rode a gratis bemo into Denpasar to visit Matahari Dept. store and was not asked for a rupiah in either direction. In fact wherever we went today, no one took advantage of me and they never do. I have never heard of any violent crimes against other people in this area. We always feel safe here. Sure there is crime, but all we have heard of is of the theft variety without violence or injury. When we go to Sanur or other heavily tourist areas many things are more expensive. If we find it more than we feel comfortable paying, we leave and find some other place to spend our money. Am I mistaken in thinking where we live may have something to do with getting overcharged and being subjected to the violent crimes we are hearing so much about recently?
