Do you have some fair-weather friends? I got a call from a friend a few days ago. Hes not on Facebook... and even if he were, he probably wouldnt read the post unless he knew it would somehow benefit him. I came to realize that the only time I hear from him is there theres some kind of agenda. It starts as a wow... sorry its been so long. How are things?, but quickly morphs into the REAL reason for the call, such as Hey... I need a phone number for... or I wanted to ask if you could help with..... Im still happy to hear his voice, but I guess I need to accept that hes primarily about HIM. Unlike the friend who dropped by with chicken soup because I had pneumonia last year (George Smoley)... or the couple of friends who called just to be sure I was okay Jeremy Thompson, Tony Marvelli) recently. I remember my mom rather disappointingly saying So what is it you want or need? Thats really the only time I hear from you when I called many years ago. I was so offended and hurt. But you know what? She was right. I needed a babysitter and she called me on my selfishness. How Id love to have her here to redo so much. How Id love to be for selfless with many friends whove been there for me. Yet all I can do is be that way now and in the future. How about you? Are your outreaches only with an agenda... or do you seek to serve? Peace and love is found in the latter.
