Do you know that Coffee Can Reduce Your Risk of Prostate Cancer? A study was conducted by researchers from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle to determine the relationship of coffee and the progression or recurrence of prostate cancer. A study was conducted by researchers from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle to determine the relationship of coffee and the progression or recurrence of prostate cancer. During the said study, 1,001 prostate cancer survivors aged between 23 and 74 who are diagnosed with prostate cancer between 2002 and 2005 participated and were asked to answer a food frequency questionable and provide information about their diet and beverage consumption over the past two years before they are diagnosed with the disease After gathering all the essential information from the participants, the analysis shows that drinking coffee has decreased the recurrence of prostate cancer. Among the 655 patients, 61 % consumed a cup of coffee per day while 12 % drank four or more cups of coffee a day. Patients who included four or more cups of coffee on their diet have significantly reduced their risk of the recurrence of their condition by 59% than those who drink a cup of coffee a day or less. In addition to these, the researchers also analyzed the link between the coffee intake and cancer-specific death in 894 patients who originally participated in the study. The study shows that after the median follow-up period, 125 men had died in the span of 8.5 years, and among these, 38 had suffered death caused by prostate cancer. Nevertheless, their coffee intake has not shown any relevance or contribution with the progression of their condition. According to Milan Geybells a previous student at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and lead author of conducted study which aims to determine the relationship of coffee intake and progression of prostate cancer is different from other studies because they used a “composite definition. He said, “We used detailed information on follow-up prostate-specific antigen levels, use of secondary treatment for prostate cancer and data from scans and biopsies to assess occurrence of metastases and cause-specific mortality during follow up. Using these detailed data, we could determine whether a patient had evidence of prostate cancer “recurrence or progression.” Apparently, the phytochemicals found in coffee contains strong anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties, which may help increase a person’s defense against prostate cancer. Nevertheless, he stated that further study still needs to be done to determine the how coffee reduces a patient’s risk of prostate cancer. Although the compounds found in coffee such as caffeine which may help inhibit cell growth and encourage apoptosis and Diterpenes cafestol and kahweol which can help inhibit cancer growth offers promising results, you shouldn’t increase your coffee intake just yet. More clinical trials need to take place before coffee can be recommended for secondary prevention. Moreover, too much caffeine may also provide harm to the body and may increase your risk for other health conditions like hypertension. Hence, it’s best to limit your intake into acceptable amounts. source [health-talks] Share with friends and family
