Doctrine of Belief in Allah WebelievethatAllahisOne(wahid),Alone(ahad),Peerless(laysa kamithlihushay),Eternal(qadim),withoutBeginningorEnd;Heisthe FirstandtheLast(al-awwalwaal-akhir).HeistheAll-Knowing(al-alim), theWise(al-hakim),theJust(al-adil),theLiving(al-hayy),theOmnipotent (al-qadir),Independentofallthings(al-ghaniy),theAll-Hearing(assami),theAll-Seeing(al-basir).HeisnottobelikenedtoHiscreatures, thereforeHehasneitherbodynorappearancenorsubstancenorform; Heisneitherheavynorlight,neithermovingnormotionless;Hehasno placenoranytime,andno-onecanpointtoHimasthereisno-thinglike Him.NothingisequaltoHim,norhasHeanyopposite.Hehasnowife, nochild,nopartnerandthereisnonecomparabletoHim.Visiondoes notperceiveHim,yetHeperceiveseverything.AnyonewholikensHim toHiscreatures,forexampleonewhosupposesthatAllahhasaface, handsandeyes,orsaysthatHecomesdowntothelowestheaven,or thatHewillappeartothepeopleofparadiselikeamoon,andsoforth, heisasonewhodoesnotbelieveinAllahandisignorantofthetrue natureofAllah,Whoisabovealldeficiency.Yeteverythingweimagine will be a creature like ourselves. As Imam Baqir (A.S.) said: He is far greater than the explanation of the wise, and far beyond the reach of discriminative knowledge (ilm daqiq). Similarly,onewhobelievesthatHewillbeseenbyHiscreatureson theDayofJudgementisanunbeliever.eventhoughhedoesnotliken Allahtoanyoneinappearance.Suchpretendershavemerelyaccepted theletteroftheQuranandthehadithwithoutusingtheirintelligence. Indeed,theyhavechosentoignoretheirintelligence,fortheyhavenot takennoteoftheuseoffiguresofspeechwhichthenatureoflanguage necessitates.Thustheyhavemisunderstoodthetruemeaningofthe Quaran and the hadith.
