Does anyone have a tried and true recipe for war cake (aka depression cake)? Im hoping to find one that doesnt use shortening, but am getting the sense that I wont be able to avoid it. My sweetheart mentioned a while ago that his grandmother used to make it and I did some research and found that, since it was made during the Depression and around wartime, it used ingredients easily found on hand and omitting those (like eggs and dairy) which would have been scarce. Other than occasional recipes using lard, most of the traditional recipes are vegan.
