Does it really matter if we lie? How often do people admit that - TopicsExpress

Does it really matter if we lie? How often do people admit that they have lied? Then to say, “So what, I lied.” Does this mean that they are now not lying about lying? And does this really equal a truth? This leads us to the question: Does lying matter? To answer this question we need an understanding of how everything we do affects our environment. Put yourself into a room where an argument has taken place; we say that you could cut the air with a knife. It follows that lying creates its own atmosphere. What kind of atmosphere would it be? Lying creates a murky cloud that prevents us from seeing the facts of the matter. And yet we always want to know the facts, we know that this is the only way to make the right decisions. So why do we lie? If we examine our own behaviour we will discover that fear lies at the foundation of lying. We may not even be conscious of the lie until afterwards. Perhaps if we spot the lie soon afterwards and regret it we can balance out the atmosphere. So why do we choose to lie rather than speak the truth? Primarily because we lack courage. Therefore, if we are to stop lying we have some inner work to do. First we must summon the courage to quell the fear that prompts us to lie, as well as summon the courage to speak the truth – and often in a split second. This would indicate that some of the lying that we do arises from instincts and therefore we may not be able to change our behaviour instantly. However, it is amazing how our awareness of what is going on changes the atmosphere created by lying. It is like a gentle breeze that blows away the cloud. ~Kristina Kaine
