Doors & Floors So...there are several doors that need to be - TopicsExpress

Doors & Floors So...there are several doors that need to be replaced...and some floors that need to be laid...so on Wednesday I went to Home Depot to look into some prices...I have a wonderful contractor that will put the doors in for me...at a price of course...but a reasonable one...so all I needed to do was go and find out the price of the doors... As for the floors...not sure I have someone to install yet...but still wanted to figure out about how much the materials for new flooring would be... So merrily off to the Home Depot I went... I talked to a very nice gentleman about the doors...a door for the back of the house...new French Doors for out to the patio...a new side/front door...and possibly a screen door for the front... The cost for the back door didnt surprise me much...so I went next to the screen door...well...a very nice one that has a glass bottom/screen on top configuration was semi-reasonable...an old fashioned wood frame reinforced bottom screen...far more in my price range...no glass...a true screen door... So far I am still ok...everything is going along delightfully well...so next we go to the side/front door...one with a window on the top half of the door that can be opened with a screen...still fairly reasonable...but now I begin to realize that I havent...as I am getting these prices...remembered to add the cost of installing them... Deep breath...its ok...be calm and press on...all will be well...its time to talk about the French Doors that will go from the fireplace room out to the patio where the grill is...this is where my resolve to get all the information needed begins to slip... Now...Im not one to shy away from spending money...especially when what its being spent on is necessary...but when the price of the French Doors was quoted...and I realized how much it would cost after I added the cost of installation...I began to get a little nervous... Its OK...deep breath in...deep breath out...press on...what about...instead of a French Door...we look at the cost of another sliding door...(you see...in my un-knowledgeable mind I think...should be less expensive...right?)...WRONG...and not wrong by a little bit either...by several hundred dollars...geez... The nice Home Depot door man gave me quotes...and informed me that the prices were only good til the end of September...WAIT...isnt that like...next week! Then the prices would all go up...the French Doors and the sliding doors significantly... Now...Im starting to get anxious...Oh just calm down,...I tell myself...you didnt think they would be free did you? Put on your big girl panties and go look at something less expensive...like...faucets and stuff... After a calming moment or two in the faucet aisle I decide I can brave going to the flooring department... Now...in the front of the house there is not a thing wrong with the flooring...some of it is practically new...since the Great Raccoon Incident of Thanksgiving 2013...a story for another day...lol...the only places I need flooring is the two main bedrooms...and the smaller of the two bathrooms...(the room that is the look at it all later room will have its makeover after we get finished looking...)... Im partial to hardwood flooring...so that is what Ive been eyeing...and they have some lovely product there at the Home Depot... I am calling a couple of other places because of the TV ads etc...one I have called...and I will not name them...advertises buy one room get one room free...well...thats simply NOT TRUE...well...it might be true for a cheap carpeting...or a stick tile...but absolutely not true for hardwood floors... When I found that out I said...I knew there must have been a catch...the guy on the other end of the phone started trying to tell me that what they had was better and amazing and...well...I told him it was false advertising and hung up... I digress... So Im off to the flooring department...I have already been here once about a week ago and brought home some of their sample pieces...some really nice choices... I know that I have a budget...so I take the sq. footage of the room and figure out just how much per square foot I can manage...and start looking... A very nice man from HD comes over and we begin to talk about the flooring...I discover that because Im putting it on terazzo flooring that there are two ways to install...stick it to the floor like you would ceramic tile...(no matting underneath here...so would really be HARDwood flooring...and the kind you click together...which would have a padding underneath... I ask...How much would installation cost? Again...obviously I know little to nothing about stuff like this because I am thinking they will say...oh...for a room that size...a couple/few hundred dollars...NOT...the least I can get away with is nearly $4 a square foot for installation alone...it doubles...and then some...the few pieces Ive picked out... We talk about ceramic tile instead...WHAT???!!!...its nearly as expensive as hardwood flooring... Now by this time...after discovering the cost of the doors...I am beginning to get really depressed/anxious/upset about all this... As calmly as I can I thank him for the information he printed me...and shuffle off to find something inexpensive to look at...hey...it worked with the faucets...lol... It didnt work...I had already picked out two ceiling fans...both less than $50...online and thought...well...I can at least get them... NOPE...by the time I had listened to the information about the doors & floors...I was past the point of no return...I looked at the fans...and almost cried...wanted to curl up in a little ball in the Gardening section and whimper...I looked for the Pharmaceutical aisle to see if there was a 6-pack of Xanax available...but no...then wandered a bit looking for the Bar...but none to be seen there at the Home Depot...lol...(BTW...I say these things in jest...I dont drink...and though I have a prescription for Xanax...the bottle Im on has over half of it left and I think it was filled about 6 months ago...) I drove home...defeated...me...who loves to spend money...was upset at the cost of the simplest things...needed things...but simple... It was Wednesday night...a long traditional family dinner night...I cooked for my dh and my sister...and after talking with them...I felt better...still amazed at the cost of things...but a little braver...I know I can do this...and it will all be OK...
