The following is a brief statement regarding the current information known to the Keith County Emergency Director. The updated information does not indicate major flooding. Additionally, please view any unverified nongovernmental information appropriately. Please go to keithcountyne.gov for a link to the most recent maps of flood predictions for Keith County and the South Platte River. Village of Paxton-There has been an indication that everyone has a 72 hour supply of water, medications and food. This is a precautionary measure out of concern for the water well south of town. You should also follow standard precautions regarding a flood including being prepared for a possible loss of electricity. Village of Brule-Brule appears to have prepared themselves for the anticipated flooding with no specific directives. Roscoe-The County is prepared for any flooding into Roscoe. Please be prepared to leave if necessary. As for the rest of the County, do not view the river gauges in the South Platte River near Roscoe as any indication of how it will affect the rest of Keith County. City of Ogallala-The City has received updated maps from the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources with indications that the water should remain between the Union Pacific Railroad and Interstate 80. ogallala-ne.gov/newsdetail_T2_R29.php Please see the preceding link for those maps. The City of Ogallala has sandbagged several City culverts in an effort to keep any flood water south of the Union Pacific Railroad. This job has been performed beyond expectations by City employees and should be completed today. There is no cause for alarm as this is a precautionary measure should water levels be higher than projected. The Department of Roads will be maintaining around the clock monitors at all 4 of their bridges that cross the Platte River in Keith County until the flood water dissipate. They will be onsite at each bridge. Keith County does not have any available sandbags for private use. However, Adams Bank & Trust has provided private use sandbags which are available at the Ogallala City Water Department at 505 East 2nd Street for those areas generally South of Second Street in Ogallala. In the unlikely event that volunteers will be needed, a list of available individuals and groups has been compiled by Keith County Emergency Management. Please refrain from traveling to any spots along the river to view the water. This is the greatest concern for the emergency personnel who will have to risk their lives to save you if a tragedy occurs. Five different response agencies were involved in having to rescue two people from the river west of Big Springs. Please comply with any requests from emergency personnel or law enforcement as we make sure we are all safe.
