Double Brothers Jesus’ half brothers did not believe in Him at first.”(John 7:5) Yet we know clearly that two of his half brothers came to believe in Him for sure, James and Jude and probably all his siblings did. (Gal 1:19; I Cor:9:5) So they were related to him two ways, as physical natural, half brothers and sisters by birth to Mary and by spiritual rebirth to Him as Savior. It was joyous for them all to know Jesus as a double brother by both natural birth and by spiritual rebirth. The Bible says, “,,,the spiritual is not first, but the natural, and afterward the spiritual. The first man (Adam) was of the earth, made of dust; the second Man is the Lord(Jesus) from heaven. As was the man of dust, so also are those who are made of dust; and as is the heavenly Man, so also are those who are heavenly. And as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly Man. (1 Cor.14:46-49) These verses teach us the fact that we are all born naturally and have the possibility of being born again spiritually. The first Adam’s trust enabled the last Adam to save him. Thus they became double brothers. The amazing thing is that everyone, both male and female have the possibility of having Jesus as a brother. “Jesus makes men holy. He takes away their sins. Both Jesus and the ones being made holy have the same Father. That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call them His brothers.” (Heb 2:11) I have two brothers whom I love, a natural brother named Wayne and a spiritual brother named Jesus. It is my desire that my natural brother experience a supernatural rebirth of the Spirit so that we will be double brothers, on two levels, both naturally and spiritually. That is only possible if we have both received Christ and experienced supernatural births as well as natural births. The first two brothers in history, Cain and Abel were separated by Cain’s lack of spiritual trust in God. Cain killed his brother Abel because he rejected God’s way. Had he listened to God and his brother who loved him, Cain would have approached God through the offering of a blood sacrifice, which represented forgiveness through the symbolic death of an innocent substitute representing Jesus death. Cain rejected God’s way and offered his own way of works. Since Cain did not accept God’s way of salvation then love on the highest level, double love, was impossible. In scripture all believers are called brothers and sisters. The bond between us in Christ is a bond of love. We are to love others who know Christ as Savior as brothers and sisters. This love is on a higher level than just natural blood relatives. It is so strong that it divides natural brothers and sisters from one another so that sometimes those of our own household hate us. It is the spiritual level which is of highest importance. My continual prayer is for both my eternal spiritual siblings and for those who do not yet know Jesus as savior, to become brothers and sisters on a double, loving basis.
