Dr. Benjamin Franklin Shumard (1820-1869) Shumard was a world famous geologist and paleontologist who uncovered a great deal of history within the United States. Shumard was born in Pennsylvania and graduated medical school in Kentucky. He practiced medicine for a while, but then uncovered his deep passion for geology and paleontology. While in Kentucky he accumulated an impressive collection of organic remains, which sparked his fame in the world of geology. Sir Charles Lyell and Edward De Verneuil, both famous for their contributions to paleontology, viewed his collection. As his work became more popular, Shumard was appointed by Dr. David Dale Owen as assistant geologist in the United Stated government survey of Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota. He remained in this survey for 10 years and wrote many reports on his work, such as Contributions to the Geology of Kentucky, which gained much recognition and even became a point of reference for European geologists who studied American geology. After working many years in Oregon and Louisville writing paleontological reports, Shumard moved to St. Louis in 1858 to work as an assistant geologist and paleontologist of the Missouri geological survey. After he traveled in pursuit of uncovering new geological evidence he returned to St. Louis and lived here until his death.
