Dr. Esam Narayana is now Additional Controller of Examinations, the first Adivasi to get an administrative post in Kakatiya University. The children in the hamlet sporting just a loin cloth used to go to the forest to collect beedi leaves or take cattle for grazing or go to nearby villages to work as labourers. Dr. Narayana had to escape from home several times to remain in school. It was out of love that his father did not want him to be away from home. However, the unrelenting boy always went back to school. “My friends and well-wishers helped me shape my life. I belong to Koya, one among the primitive tribal groups -- Gond, Kolam, Pardhan, Nayakpod and Kondareddi. I am the first to complete a PhD degree and secure a university job,” he says with pride. Having completed university education, he was appointed as assistant professor of Zoology in Kakatiya University. “All tribal groups from Visakha to Adilabad district know me well and the youth look up to me now,” he said. The tribal people in remote hamlets in all districts invite him and accord him a hero’s welcome showing great eagerness to interact with him.
