Dr. Michael Klein spent years conducting randomized controlled studies, researching, and publishing on episiotomy. His conclusion--over 20 years ago--was that the procedure is rarely needed and when used without medical necessity, increases the risks of harm it was thought to prevent (things like incontinence and worse perineal trauma). Other research has confirmed what he found. Several doctors and midwives I trust have quoted their rates at between 1% and 4%. Weve known for over 20 years that routine episiotomy is not only unnecessary, but is HARMFUL to women. If we equate this relatively minor procedure with we shouldnt update our practices, were saying, Women and their vaginas dont matter. There is no other explanation. 20 years later, and this is still routine practice in some places. 20 years.
