Dr Ruth Neumann, President of The Lane Cove Bushland and Conservation Society joins the loud call for further changes to Code 10/50 during the review TO STOP THE ABUSE. It is a real loss to our society that people are taking out these very old trees, not just because of the heritage that we are losing but also they are very important habitat for our wildlife. We have been accompanied here today by these absolutely magnificent lorikeets in this gorgeous flowering Iron Bark. Yes, this is the second change to the Code 10/50 vegetation clearing rules that occurred on the 26th Nov. What it has achieved is it has actually reduced the vegetation clearing buffers in areas classified as bushfire risk. We have two categories of reserves. In Category One it has been reduced from 350 metres down to 100 metres and for Category Two reserves, smaller reserves, it has been reduced from 150 metres to 30 metres. The RFS has been quite strong on its website, saying if there is removal of tree illegally it will attract heavy penalties but the real issue is WHO IS MONITORING IT to know if what is being removed is within the zone or outside of the zone. WITH THE TIMEFRAME FOR THE REVIEW, THE SCALE OF ABUSE THAT IS POSSIBLE IN THAT TIME IS A MAJOR CONCERN. The most effective thing that could be done immediately is to REMOVE THE SELF-ASSESSMENT ASPECT that goes together with these recently reduced vegetation buffers and that at least puts us back, in suburban areas, to where we were before the introduction of this code.
