Driving down to Great Bend this morning, I had a flash back to - TopicsExpress

Driving down to Great Bend this morning, I had a flash back to 1969, the 45th anniversary of the moon landing. I had been peddling papers for over 3 years every day as an incoming Senior at LHA so I decided to accept a position down at Brants farm in Great Bend Township as a farm hand for 25.00 a week plus room and board. My first full day on the farm was the day of the moon landing that evening. I remember being asked if I was going to stay up and watch it on TV and I replied too tired, the biggest event in world history and I slept through it. The next day at 5 a.m. as we were headed to the barn, Ed Brant asked me how I felt, I replied fresh as a daisy, he and Junior laughed all the way to the barn. Soon I was accumulated to the farm life, the smell and drinking raw milk soon was an afterthought, the meals were huge and I took full advantage of them. What great memories of great people there at the farm, Ed and Marie, their children, Junior and Dick Drake. It is sad to see so many farms now empty in our area now. This picture of the farm from last year, run now by Ed and Maries son Keith who was just knee high to a grasshopper back then in 1969.
