Driving home yesterday afternoon with my kids I decided to listen - TopicsExpress

Driving home yesterday afternoon with my kids I decided to listen to my StoryCorps cd with them... These stories are of real life connections between people, this CD in particular happens to focus on love. Love found, love lost and love found at last. Not manufactured Disney show antics of teen relationships, not reality tv, not weekday sitcom sarcastic love and not unrealistic chick flick love. These storys are very real, raw happy and sometime incredibly sad. The stories are spoken by the people whove lived them. My kids quickly became engrossed, listening so intently, occasionally asking questions and anticipating the next story. What was a drive home from the orthodontist turned into a drive down out past our house and into the to country just to listen to the CD and finish all of the stories. Im sharing this to encourage you to think outside the box with your children. Have older generations share stories with them, talk to them about the old days, talk to them about real relationships...the good and the bad. Teach them that lifes not perfect but that people persevere. Guide them in thoughts of situations where their integrity, honesty and morals might be questioned and how they might respond. Engage them in conversations about what they think about it all or better yet how it all makes them feel. Bring people from all walks of life into your circle, submerge them in heartfelt human connection. Give them doses of non-fiction via stories, books, one on one interactions, documentaries, etc. Help them to see beyond the end of their noses, beyond electronic screens, beyond their schools, churches, towns and country. What I witnessed yesterday from listening to a CD of love stories with my children was just beautiful. They were touched by sadness, moved to tears and had belly laughs all in the same hour and all about the same subject. At the ages of 12 and 9 they grasped the concept fully...it evoked such sweet and tender sharing between us. I guess is what Im trying to say is you cant beat real life! The moments, interactions and stories that stir our spirits, that inspire and guide us! The concept that everyones story matters, everyone life is a gift and how we can grow into better humans by listening, feeling and even sharing our own story and lives with others... and who doesnt love having tender moments with their kiddos to boot!
