Driving through Glandorf yesterday, I could not help put feel the excitement and energy of a village about to come to life. Countless volunteers had already begun the (seemingly) smooth process of transforming the familiar sites and streets for the annual Park Fest. Although I am not a native of Glandorf, I felt all the excitement and pride of someone who had grown up there. My destination was a garage sale on Tile Street held at a quaint house that is listed in the courthouse records as old as dirt, as the actual deed was lost in a fire long ago. Standing on Tile Street, looking back toward the Main Street of the small Ohio village, I was somehow transported back in time. I imagined the town and streets as they once were . I envisioned them as they will be tonight and tomorrow, teeming with people who walk the pavement each day and others who will travel from afar to revisit the rituals of their youth. I looked up at the tower of the towns magnificent church and marveled that the same spirit of volunteerism that built St. John the Baptist Catholic Church lives on in a new generation. As I drove back past the fire station I noticed a sign advertising a chicken barbeque after Mass, The spirit of small town America lives and thrives in Glandorf Ohio. And thats a good thing.
