Drop! Bend! Cover! Stamp! They continued with the same motion - TopicsExpress

Drop! Bend! Cover! Stamp! They continued with the same motion again and again occasionally straightening their aching backs to collect another bundle of sodden grass. Every now and again, one glances at his watch and frowns. Why does time pass so slowly when you want it to go fast? When Mr Solomon announced that the whole school would meet at the sports field to plant grass at 1500hrs, the looks on the faces of the Chengelo pupils said it all - they hated the idea! The groans and grunts of disapproval expressed their disgust at having to do a dirty, sweaty job like that. But despite all the complaints, everyone arrived promptly at 1455hrs (obeying the rule that you have to report to an activity five minutes before it starts) and waited, hoping that something would happen to postpone the tedious job ahead. But as usual, things didnt go their way and they were each given a line to plant. Work began. The ground was muddy and murky puddles of water lay everywhere. They made their way slowly down the lines and their feet grew heavier and heavier as the brown, sticky mud collected and refused to be shaken off. As the first people began to finish, a sense of restlessness descended on them; before they knew it, the first mudball flew, then the second, third and fourth until people began to lose count! All those within throwing distance joined in and mud was flying everywhere. What had promised to be a boring, dull job had turned into a lot of fun. We look at the grass [now] and remember that grass-planting as if it were yesterday. The grass, which has now started to look strong and healthy, as the rains come again, has been rolled and sprayed with weed killer. The broadleaf weed has practically disappeared and so have the days of planting grass. However the days of those good old days will always remain and when we see the beautiful sports field in the future, we will have the satisfaction of saying we did that. - Amy Kingdom, née Cantlay (Class of 93) Chengelo owes a lot to its pioneering staff and students. Were you one of them? Tell us more about those early years! The school wouldnt be what it is today without your creativity, resilience and sense of fun and community. THANK YOU! #LookingBack
