Due to a recent conversation with someone else who is currently fundraising to get their child a diabetic alert dog like us, I felt inspired to write this out. We have had nothing but positive feedback and support from our awesome community, however some people have not been as lucky. They have a lot of people questioning why they need this and why they want it. Why not just get a CGM? I cant speak for others, but I want to share our reasoning. Last night just happened to give me exactly what I needed to prove my point. The picture below shows dexcom, his continuous glucose monitor (CGM). It alerts us when he is low and high. I actually rave about this product. Its the BEST that technology has to offer us at this point. It has saved Lukes life more times than I can count, waking me up in the middle of the night to something I would have missed otherwise. Ive been sick for about 2 weeks now, last night was a rough one for me and unfortunately Luke has to pay the price for that. First problem, if you cant tell by the picture dex quit working around 3:30 AM. Dexcom is great but it fails more times than Im comfortable with, especially considering my sons life is the one at risk. Why not just change the sensor when it stops giving us readings? Ill share something personal here, these sensors are expensive. We pay 500$ a month for 4 dexcom g4 sensors. That is almost as much as our mortgage payment. There are months we go without other things so we can use this technology. Its not as easy as its not working at the moment so lets change it. A diabetic alert dog is not 100%, but when it comes to your childs safety, why not utilize every possible tool to help keep them healthy. Second issue, he was High all night long. I slept through the earlier alerts, which is something I barely ever do. A Diabetic alert dog will keep alerting until it gets fixed. I would not have woken up and had the immediate fear of ketones due to the prolonged high. My hope is to share this with doubters, not in our community because you guys are awesomely supportive!! But to those who are questioning the care that these people want for their young children, I hope you all read this and get a better glimpse into our lives.
