Durga Puja, the most awaited festival of Bengal, is only one day away. Kolkata is the hotbed of Durga Puja festival. The cityscape is dotted with theme-based puja pandals from north to south, and from east to west. Hundreds of pandals make it difficult to create a complete Durga puja Kolkata guide. Out of my experience, I am sharing with you the details of some of the best Durga puja themes 2013 in Kolkata. Hope, you will find this effort useful. Suruchi Sangha in Alipore, a Sports and Cultural club of Kolkata, presents “Bangla Amar Ma” as Durga Puja theme 2013. Since its inception in 1954, Suruchi Sangha has been associated with one of the 10 famous Durga Puja pandals in Kolkata. The club hit the headlines for its unique puja theme based on the need of environmental awareness and the pollution of 50% of rivers of the world, last year. This year, their theme is tribute to the whole of Bengal in form of Divine Mother. Inculcating a sense of belonging to the birthplace of noble men and freedom fighters among Bengalis is the prime focus of Suruchi Sangha’s 2013 puja theme. Kumortuli Sarbojanin Durga Puja is one of the best in north Kolkata. Located near Sovabazar Launch Ghat, the puja committee comes up with an innovative theme every year. The theme of their pandal and puja in 2012 was an interface between the culture of Bengal and that of Gujarat. The distinct slices of life in these two states of India brought alive the pandal as a concrete picture of unity of diversity last year. Kumortuli Sarbojanin puja committee has moved from culture to divinity with the Durga Puja theme 2013, Jyotirlinga. The pandal will consists of 13 jyotirlinga, and the idol of Goddess Durga with one thousand hands will steal the show this year. Hatibagan Nabin Pally Durga Puja is famous for creative pandals and artistic idols. This Kolkata puja is a must visit for their themes of cultural, social and national significance. Their stunning 2012 puja theme, “Adi Khadi”, bears out to this statement. The theme was a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi who had introduced Khadi as a symbol of nationalism during the National Cooperation movement in British India. In 2013, the puja committee is going to capture the highlights of peace movement between India and Pakistan in the design, style and decoration of the pandal. - Pallimangal Samity of Jodhpur Park has chosen such a theme that will connect Bengal with France. “Cannes to Kolkata” is the Durga puja 2013 theme of Pallimangal Samity in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Indian Cinema. As the Cannes Film Festival committee has been honoring the celebrities of India for last few years, the Pallimangal Samity puja 2013 will be graced by the presence of such guests from France as Giles Jacob, president of the film festival, and Fabrice Hergott, director of Museum of Modern Art of Paris. Also, a French street performer has been invited to hold a show “Illusion on Black Top” on the festive evenings. Dum Dum Park Tarun Sangha is one of the winning puja committees in Kolkata. Their Durga puja themes are innovative, colorful, creative and thoughtful. The puja celebration is incomplete without a visit to this north Kolkata pandal. “Unity in Diversity”, reflected by a rich collage of multiple different colors, was their puja theme 2012. This year, their focus is social awareness about the curse of urbanization, inflicted by rampant construction of multistoried buildings. The 2013 Durga Puja theme of Dum Dum Park Tarun Sangha is supposed to be the collective voice of environment-conscious Bengalis in protest against such practices. Selimpur Durgotsab Committee is among the few known for their avant-garde Durga puja themes. Purification of the satanic souls is the theme of the pandal of Salimpur Durgotsab Committee this year. The idol of the buffalo demom, Mahishasur, is said to be made of nut and bolts this year. The demons will be seen being purified under an artificial shower of water at the pandal. The 2013 Durga puja theme of College Square pandal is a take on the natural catastrophe in Uttarakhand. The glimpses of the devastation caused by the natural calamity are being captured in the theme of the pandal by the artists Supratik Das. A replica of the submerged idol of Lord Shiva will be exhibited here. The outer design of the College Square pandal is influenced by Thailand’s Nag Temple. The 60-ft high pandal is a must visit this year. The Salk Lake puja committee has based their theme for the pandal 2013 on the nationwide protest against such social crimes as rape. The theme of violence against women in India, depicted in the interior of the Salt Lake Puja pandal will evoke public sentiments in connection with the Nirbhaya rape case. Koel Mallick, a famous Bengali actress, is the brand ambassador of the committee this year.
